I’ve been a professional actor for a long time, and always considered myself a pretty good “shower singer.” Or a “driving with the windows down” singer. But I never pursued musicals or anything that involved singing because I had no training and no confidence competing against “real singers” for work. I did two sessions recently with Jodi because I had been asked by a producer to prepare a song. Ugh. The only thing I wanted was to not embarrass myself. Instead, I was offered the role. Jodi found what my strong points were, gave me confidence that they were real and valid. And then she worked on my deficits. And wow, did I feel good when I left her second session. I was confident, prepared, I knew where to breathe, how to warm up, how to find the notes with confidence. I didn’t want to start from zero and have someone teach me music theory. I wanted a teacher who would coach whatever skills I had into a performance I could be proud of. Jodi nailed it.
