How do I become a working actor?

  • A Belt is a kind of vocal quality. A call or shout on pitch. This quality of sound is derived from powerful, intensified speech. I would direct you toward discovering an urgency in your story that would propel an intention for your sound to ring through the rafters, called a belt. A voice quality you can maintain at a Friday night Football game, the Courtroom or on stage 8 shows a week singing Broadway, Pop, Rock, Opera, Country and Jazz! All sound qualities, one technique.

I teach belting techniques in conjunction with freeing and developing The Natural Voice (Kristen Linklater) of all the registers(including head voice). I also include lessons from Arthur Lessac as taught to me by Barry Kur at Penn State University. And of course my most most influential mentor and friend, Joan Lader. Joan taught me the value of Jo Estills work. Jo Estill teaches that with the vocal techniques taught voice students can sing any genre of music. Broadway, Opera, Pop, Jazz, Country, Rock.

A healthy voice is a healthy voice. The techniques you will learn as a singer will serve you anyway you want to be persuasive with your voice.I teach the whole voice, not just “Belting”. The most 'belty' musical theatre, rock and pop singers work the entire instrument as a way of maintaining the proper vocal health, and the ability to sustain an 8 show week, rehearsals all while still looking ahead at the next gig.

  • I teach Bel Cantos how to find their inner Aretha Franklin.
